Ghana National Assciation Of Scrap Metal Dealers Holds Emergency Meeting With Steel Companies,Move Is To Call Off Their Two Week Sit Down Strike

An emergency meeting between Ghana National Association of Scrap metal dealers and steel manufacturing companies in Ghana have been held today as part of measures to address their concerns in the scrap metal retail trade.


The meeting which brought all representatives of the leadership of scrap metal dealers in Ghana was to table their concerns to the steel companies and to strike a common fair playing ground for the two parties.

The concerns which include increment of their prices of the scrap metal in tonnage to the steel companies as well as Hospitality for their clients including rest and washrooms to make their work more comfortable especially those that arrives at the companys premises overnight.

According to the National organizer of the Ghana National scrap metal dealers Association,Innocent Turckson, the challenges associated with the search, sorting and and transportation of the scrap metal to the steel manufacturing companies has become so costly and the pricing regime has to be more sustainable.

Innocent Turckson presenting the petition further said it was necessary for the steel companies to develop washrooms and place of convenience for the scrap metal dealers when they bring in their raw materials to feed their companies.

The meeting which was facilitated by scrap metal agents dealers in Ghana was to deliberate on a win win”pricing regime for the parties.

Abdul Salam Yakubu is the president of scrap dealers Agents in Ghana who shed more light on the demands for Hospitality by the scrap dealers.

Steel manufacturing companies rely heavily on scrap metal dealers in the supply of raw materials to feed the steel production plants.

Accordingly scrap metals in huge tonnages from various parts of the sixteen regions of Ghana contribute over 70 percent of the raw materials used in the production of processes following the ban on export of scrap metals in Ghana.


This the stakeholders demands that their contribution to the sustainability of the steel companies be recognized.

The negotiation on the pricing of ttscrap metal after persistent back and forth stood at Ghc 4,700 per tonnage,with the steel companies proposing a possible upward adjustment after the 10th August meeting with the dealers.


They further argued that the steel manufacturing companies have two months stocks and with the drop in price of the commodity,buying the scraps at a higher cost will leave the steel companies operate unsustainable.

Wade is a representative of Sentuo steel who spoke on the subject.

Chairman of the scrap metal dealers Association,Benjamin Ampah in his remarks urged government to intervene.
