Confirmed Galamsey Pit Collapses At Twifo Mampong — 4 Trapped, 1 Confirmed Dead

A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Twifo Mampong in the Central Region, where a galamsey (illegal mining) pit collapsed, trapping four people underground. One person has so far been confirmed dead.

According to reports, the five individuals involved were working illegally in the pit — four were underground, while one operated the pumping machine above.

The operator survived and rushed home to raise the alarm.

Police and rescue teams, including NADMO officials, are currently on-site, working around the clock to retrieve the remaining victims and secure the area.

The District Chief Executive for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Hon. Isaac Yawson, told Angel News that preliminary information suggests the pit belongs to a known illegal miner.

He explained that the young men had allegedly entered the site secretly at night without the owner’s consent.

The DCE confirmed that he has ordered the immediate arrest of the pit owner, as rescue efforts continue to either retrieve the trapped individuals alive or recover their bodies.
