Improving Quality Of University Education And Research Critical To Ghana’s Development – Hon.Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has emphasized that the role of university education in national development cannot be underestimated, as it serves as the foundation for critical research needed to advance the country.

He noted that government has implemented several measures to support universities across the country, enabling them to train students and researchers capable of finding sustainable solutions to Ghana’s challenges.

According to him, government acknowledges the immense value of research, hence the provision of funds through GETFund to support research activities in various universities.

He added that the introduction of the no fees policy for first-year students is also to promote access and train more students to tackle societal problems.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu further stated that government is aware of the infrastructural challenges facing many universities and is committed to completing all ongoing and stalled projects before starting new ones.

These remarks were contained in a speech delivered on his behalf by his Special Advisor at the Ministry, Prof. George Kofi Oduro, during the 17th Congregation of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region, where over 2,000 students graduated.

Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, Hon. Issah Salifu Taylor, expressed concern over the destruction of water bodies and lands as a result of galamsey activities.

He urged the University of Mines and Technology to spearhead innovative ideas through its training of students to help address the environmental challenges confronting the nation.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology, Prof. Richard Akwasi Amankwa, highlighted efforts the university is making to tackle environmental issues.
He said Umat has the technology to clear all the polluted waters bodies in Ghana if given the mandate.

He encouraged the graduates not to relent but to move forward with determination, using the knowledge and skills gained to solve problems and contribute meaningfully to national development.
