KNUST College Of Health Sciences Has Been Appointed As The New Vice Chancellor

Professor Christian Agyare, Provost of the KNUST College of Health Sciences has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of KNUST, effective 1st August, 2026.

Professor Agyare is a renowned Ghanaian professor, pharmacist, and biomedical researcher who specializes in pharmaceutical microbiology, natural products, and medicinal plant research.

He attended Prempeh College before furthering his education at KNUST, where he earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) and Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degrees.

He later obtained a doctorate in natural sciences from the University of Münster in Germany through a DAAD scholarship.

Professor Agyare has also conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco and the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research. His research focuses heavily on:

* Antimicrobial agents from medicinal plants

* Wound healing and anti-inflammatory treatments

* Antibiotic resistance

* Traditional African medicine and natural products

He is widely respected in Ghana’s pharmaceutical and academic circles, with over 150 peer-reviewed publications, several books and book chapters, and thousands of academic citations to his name.

In 2025, he received the “Academic Pharmacist of the Year” award at the maiden Pharma Excellence Awards organized by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana in recognition of his contributions to pharmaceutical education, research, mentorship, and health policy.

Beyond academia, he is also known for advocating the scientific preservation of traditional medicinal knowledge in Ghana and Africa.
