Aowin Traditional Council Enforces Land Reclamation Bonds To Combat Galamsey

The Aowin Traditional Council has taken a significant step towards ensuring environmental sustainability in the mining sector.

By mandating all licensed miners to sign a bond guaranteeing land reclamation after mining activities, the council aims to restore mined lands to their original state.

This move is crucial, given the devastating environmental impacts of mining, including water pollution, deforestation, and soil degradation.

It is part of a broader effort to promote responsible mining practices in Ghana.

The Chief of Nkwanta, Nana Ntow III, stated that the traditional council will no longer tolerate galamsey activities. Similar efforts have been undertaken in other regions, such as the Sefwi Traditional Council’s ban on illegal mining and the Jema community’s initiatives to protect their land for future generations.

“The Traditional Council has mandated all licensed miners to visit the council and sign a bond. This bond ensures that after mining activities, the miners will reclaim the land to its original state. Failure to comply will attract severe penalties, including prosecution.”

This bold initiative seeks to address the devastating environmental impacts of galamsey, which have plagued the area with issues like polluted water bodies, destroyed forests, and degraded soils.
