Ghanaians Erupt In Joy As Parliament Repeals Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy)

Ghanaians are erupting in joy after Parliament’s historic decision to repeal the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Ley).
The levy, which was introduced in 2022, had been a thorn in the side of many, imposing a 1% charge on electronic transactions. Critics argued that it disproportionately affected the poor and discouraged digital transactions, ultimately harming the economy.
As news of the repeal spread, Ghanaians took to social media to express their relief and gratitude. Many praised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for fulfilling its campaign promise to abolish the tax.
Others celebrated the fact that the repeal would promote financial inclusion and encourage the use of digital payment platforms without imposing additional costs on users.
“I’m so happy that the E-Levy has been repealed!” exclaimed one Ghanaian. “It was a huge burden on us, especially those of us who rely on mobile money transactions for our daily business.”
Another Ghanaian added, “This is a great victory for us! The E-Levy was a regressive tax that punished the poor and vulnerable. We’re grateful that our voices have been heard.”
In a vox pop interview with Angel Tv News, reporter Bismark Mensah Ghanaians expressed their joy and relief at the repeal.
