Fire Guts Temporary Sex Workers Structures In Sekondi European Town For The Second Time After 3 Years

A popular establishment in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region, frequented by commercial sex workers, experienced its second fire outbreak on 9 September 2025, after three years in the same vicinity.

‎The fire incident occurred early this morning at the European Town Railway (Rails Mu), where a significant portion of the area was devastated by flames.

Approximately 50 temporary structures, including a church building and properties belonging to commercial sex workers, were destroyed.

‎The initial fire outbreak was reported on September 9, 2022, when the previous Sekondi Metropolitan Assembly management attempted to evacuate the commercial sex workers and others residing in temporary wooden structures.

Unfortunately, this attempt had no lasting effect.

‎Regarding today’s fire, which took place between 4 PM and 5 PM, the Western Regional Fire Service received a distress call.

Fire officers quickly responded, bringing fire tenders to the area occupied by commercial sex workers to combat the blblaze.

‎Eyewitnesses recounted that they were asleep when they received calls about the fire.

One eyewitness noted the resemblance of this incident to the previous fire that occurred three years ago in the same location and urged authorities to thoroughly investigate these recurring situations.

Thankfully, no casualties were reported, although one individual lamented the loss of exercise books designated for her child’s school.

‎Another eyewitness shared how she woke up and alerted others in the area about the fire, but despite her efforts, she was unable to retrieve any belongings from her room, as her children advised her that life is more important than material possessions.

An elderly woman involved in fishing mentioned the loss of her three fishing nets and other equipment in the blaze.

‎The founder of the International Glorious Greenland Ministries, Pastor Mavis Torkono, whose church is located nearby, expressed deep concern about the activities of commercial sex workers in the area.

‎Meanwhile, the Deputy Western Regional Commander of the Ghana Nional Fire Service, D.O. 1 Edith Dunyo, reported that they received a distress call about the fire outbreak around 5:30 AM today in the Sekondi station control room.

Fire service personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene with their fire hydrants. D.O. 1 Edith Dunyo emphasized that upon their arrival, her team acted swiftly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent areas.
