Bono East Targets Primary Healthcare To Reduce Maternal Deaths And Improve Newborn Survival.

The Bono East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Freeman Samson Samani, has called for urgent action to strengthen primary healthcare delivery in the region, as authorities push to improve maternal and newborn health and non-communicable disease outcomes through quality and accessible care.

Speaking at the 2025 Health Sector Annual Performance Review held at the conference hall of the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council in Techiman, he explained that the region’s focus on improving maternal and newborn health and NCD outcomes through quality and accessible primary healthcare must translate into concrete interventions, especially in underserved communities.

He revealed that maternal mortality in the region increased in 2025, raising serious concern among health authorities. Dr. Samani noted that some districts continue to record particularly poor outcomes.

He stressed that each maternal death represents a devastating loss to families and communities. He pointed to low skilled delivery coverage in some districts as a major contributing factor to both maternal and neonatal deaths.
The Bono East Regional Minister, Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi, who also addressed the gathering, expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of the region’s health sector and commended health workers for their dedication and service.

Hon. Owusu Antwi further highlighted ongoing government efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure, particularly through the construction of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds to improve access to primary healthcare at the community level.
