Pregnant Women In Baase Risk Lives To Access Healthcare Over Bad Road And No School.

In Baase, a farming community in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District, giving birth safely has become a daily gamble for pregnant women.

With no motorable road and no health facility in the community, residents say they are forced to carry women in labor on motorcycles for several kilometers to Offinso / Worapong a journey many describe as dangerous and painful.

Residents say the deplorable state of the road has cut the community off from vehicles, leaving motorbikes as the only option during emergencies.

“The road is very bad. When a woman goes into labor, we don’t get cars to send her to Offinso.

We carry them on motorbikes. Some deliver on the way and others lose their babies,” a resident lamented.

They added that during the rainy season, even motorbike riders refuse to come, leaving pregnant women stranded.

Beyond maternal health, education is also suffering. There is no school in Baase.

As a result, children walk long distances through muddy and bushy paths to access schools in neighboring communities.

“Most of our children bathe in mud on their way to school because there is no school here.

The road is bad and they suffer every day,” another resident said.

Parents say the situation has forced many children, especially those under 10, to stay home instead of going to school.

The residents, mostly farmers, also say they cannot transport their produce to market.

Cocoa, plantain and foodstuffs rot in the bush because of high transport costs and lack of vehicles.

“We feel abandoned. Our farm products get spoilt because no car can enter Baase. Motorbike riders charge too much,” a farmer complained.

The community is appealing to the District Assembly, the Member of Parliament Hon Frank Yeboah, and government to urgently reshape the Baase road and build a school.

“We are begging government, Please reshape our road so pregnant women can get to hospital safely.

Build a school here for our children too. We pay taxes and we deserve development,” they pleaded.
