Berekum Residents Demonstrated Today Against Mining Activities Which Is Ongoing In Berekum East And West.
Residents of Berekum east and west in the Bono Region have taken to the streets of Berekum to protest mining activities in the area.
The demonstrators are raising concerns over the destruction of farmlands and water bodies, as well as the potential health and environmental consequences of the activities.
The residents are calling on the government and relevant authorities to take urgent action to stop mining activities in the Berekum Traditional Area.
Leader of the Berekum Citizens Association, KOFI KYERE DIABOUR, says residents will not support mining activities in the area, whether legal or illegal, due to their impact on the environment and livelihoods.
He says mining activities are destroying farmlands and polluting water bodies, while exposing residents to potential health risks.
Mr. Kyere Diabour is therefore urging the government to engage stakeholders in the area and take decisive measures to protect the environment and safeguard the future of communities in the Berekum Traditional Area.
Some of the demonstrators say they cannot afford to loose their farmlands and livelihoods to illegal mining.
They are calling on the government to quickly intervene to halt the activities of these people before the consequences get out of control
The Member of Parliament for the Berekum East Constituency, SIMON AMPAABENG KYEREMEH, says the effects of illegal mining are already evident in the destruction of water bodies
According to the MP, the pollution and destruction of water bodies pose a serious threat to the environment and the livelihoods of residents.
Mr. Kyeremeh has assured the demonstrators of his support in their fight against illegal mining and says he will engage the appropriate authorities to ensure that action is taken to halt the activities.
