Ghana Gas Needs More Investment To Sustain Energy Sector – PURC.
The Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Mr. Shafic Suleman, has called for increased investment in Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) to sustain the country’s energy sector.
Mr. Suleman made the call during an industrial tour by the Commissioners and Management of the PURC to Ghana Gas operational facilities to assess the company’s operations, infrastructure and investment needs.
He described Ghana Gas as a strategic national asset and a critical player in Ghana’s energy sector, particularly because of its role in supplying natural gas for power generation.
According to him, the PURC was impressed with the performance of Ghana Gas and recognized the need for continuous investment to maintain and expand its infrastructure.
The PURC Executive Secretary also raised concerns about the integrity and sustainability of Ghana Gas infrastructure, particularly unauthorized activities by third parties around the company’s pipelines and processing facilities.
He stressed the need to protect the company’s infrastructure and strengthen its capacity to ensure reliable gas supply to the power and industrial sectors.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Madam Judith Adjobah Blay, has disclosed that the company intends to reinvest its profits into expansion and improving the reliability of its operations.
She said the company’s focus is now shifting from profitability to expansion, with plans to invest its earnings in making its operations more efficient and ensuring reliable and available gas for power generation and industrial use.
She disclosed that Ghana Gas is also close to commencing construction of its third compressor, which is expected to provide additional reliability and redundancy in the company’s gas processing operations.
Board Chairman of the PURC, Hon. Moses Asaga, also highlighted the importance of Ghana Gas beyond the production and supply of natural gas for power generation.
He explained that the company also produces condensates, which serve an important role in Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector.
