Ahafo Regional Minister Tours Newmont Mining Site At Kenyasi

The Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Mrs. Charity Gardiner, on Thursday, July 24, visited the Newmont Africa mining site at Kenyasi as part of her working tour of key organizations in the region.

She was accompanied by a high-powered delegation, including the High Commissioner of India to Ghana, Mr. Manish Gupta, and his wife.

Speaking to the media during the visit, Hon. Mrs. Gardiner highlighted the numerous benefits the Ahafo Region derives from the operations of Newmont Africa.

She encouraged residents to address any disagreements with the company amicably and cautioned Newmont against taking matters into their own hands when dealing with communities. Instead, she urged peaceful conflict resolution.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi North, Hon. Hafiz Dauda Debeil, also addressed the media, assuring that stakeholders are working together to address the challenges faced by Newmont.

These include illegal mining activities and speculative structures. He emphasized that resolving these issues is crucial to ensuring the company’s sustainability and continued benefits for the local communities.

Mr. Joseph Danso, Director of Social Performance at Newmont Africa, reiterated the company’s commitment to the region.

He stated that Newmont contributes significantly through its foundation and by fulfilling its obligations in taxes and royalties to the state.

He further revealed that the company plans to embark on road construction projects within the next three years.
