Western Regional Minister Urges Enforcement Of By-Laws Beyond Sanitation Day For Long-Term Sustainability

The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson has called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to go beyond the symbolic monthly National Sanitation Day exercises and actively enforce local sanitation by-laws to ensure lasting environmental cleanliness.

Speaking after personally taking part in the National Sanitation Day cleanup exercise in Sekondi, the Minister commended the level of participation and described the exercise as a success.

However, he emphasized that while such community cleanups are important, they are not sufficient on their own to address the region’s growing sanitation challenges.

He noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse, choked drains, and poor waste management practices continue to plague communities despite the periodic clean-up campaigns.

According to him, the sustainability of any sanitation initiative depends largely on a culture of cleanliness backed by law enforcement and civic responsibility.

The municipal chief executive for the Effia Kwesimintsim Hon. Abdul Majeed in an interview with the media after the clean up exercise thanked the western regional minister for participating in the sanitation day and said the Effia Kwesimintsim has limited its clean u exercise to Apremdu market to welcome those coming from Jubilee grounds.
