Teacher Deficit Prompts Nzema East To Honour Dedicated Educators

The Nzema East Municipality in the Western Region is struggling with a teacher deficit of over 400, a situation heavily affecting teaching and learning across schools in the area.

The shortage has been worsened by frequent transfer requests from teachers, many of whom leave after only two years due to poor educational infrastructure.

In response, the Office of the Member of Parliament and the Municipal Assembly has taken steps to motivate and retain teachers by honouring 21 hardworking teachers and 6 retired educators for their dedication to quality education delivery.

As part of the recognition, awardees received various valuable items such as motorbikes, deep freezers, television sets, cash prizes, and other tools to support their work.

The overall Best Teacher, Stephen Mensah of Kwame Nkrumah SHS, was celebrated for his exceptional performance. He received GHC 10,000, a motorbike, and a plaque.

The Member of Parliament for Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira, Kofi Arko-Nokoe, explained that this was the first time such a major ceremony had been organized to celebrate teachers in the municipality.

He noted that as a former teacher himself, he deeply understands the difficulties educators face.

He stressed that teachers are central to developing the human resource capacity of the nation and deserve recognition to boost their morale.

He added that the awards are also part of deliberate measures to reduce the rural–urban drift of teachers and encourage them to remain in the area.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Nzema East, Herbert Kuah Dickson, told our reporter Nana fynn that the Assembly is working to improve educational infrastructure to create a more conducive learning environment and minimize teacher transfers.

In an interview, overall Best Teacher Stephen Mensah expressed gratitude for the recognition and encouraged continuous support for educators.

End.
