NHIA Warns Healthcare Providers Against Illegal Charges, Says Offenders Face Jail Term.

The Asutifi North District Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr. Owusu Berchie, has warned that healthcare providers who illegally charge National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders risk prosecution and possible jail terms.

Speaking to the media during a stakeholders’ meeting at Kenyasi to create awareness of the NHIA office in Kenyasi and educate the public on the benefits of the NHIS, Mr. Berchie urged accredited healthcare providers to desist from charging unauthorized fees to insured patients or face the full rigours of the law.

He emphasized that the NHIA is committed to protecting the rights of NHIS members and ensuring that healthcare providers comply with the Scheme’s regulations.

Also speaking at the event, the Ahafo Regional Operations Manager of the NHIA, Mr. Thomas Asante Krobea Opare, said the Authority pays healthcare providers promptly to ensure the smooth delivery of services.

The Member of Parliament for the Asutifi North Constituency, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, said the stakeholders’ engagement was aimed at addressing the persistent issue of illegal charges at healthcare facilities following numerous complaints from NHIS subscribers.
