Abandoned Refuse Dump Poses Health Threat To Weija And Adjoining Communities- Residents Cry.

Residents of Weija-Oblogo and surrounding communities are raising alarm over an abandoned refuse dump, warning that it poses a serious public health and environmental threat.
A visit to the site revealed a massive heap of waste emitting a foul stench. Leachate from the dump is reportedly washing into the Weija River, a key source of drinking water for several communities.
The area, which previously served as a community playground, is alleged to have been converted into a dumpsite by the local Assembly Member.
Residents told journalists that the Weija River supports fishing and provides water for communities including Apraku and Bortianor.
They said the river is no longer safe for human use and is causing mass fish deaths.
The residents are appealing to the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly to evacuate the waste or cover it with sand to prevent further contamination of the river.
The Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation [NADMO], Mr. Emmanuel Essel, confirmed that the dumpsite is a major contributor to increased turbidity in the river.
He cautioned that water drawn from the source is not hygienic and poses health risks to consumers.
