Breast Cancer Claimed 2,695 Lives In Ghana In 2024 — Imah CEO Calls For Early Screening To Save Lives.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer affecting women in Ghana, with health experts calling for increased awareness, regular screening and early medical intervention to improve treatment outcomes.

Chief Executive Officer of the International Maritime Hospital (IMH), Dr. Victus Victor Anaab-Bisi, said breast cancer accounts for about one-third of all new cancer cases among women in Ghana.

He disclosed that more than 5,400 new breast cancer cases were recorded in Ghana in 2024, with 2,695 deaths recorded from the disease during the same period.

He noted that breast cancer is more treatable and better managed when detected early, making early screening and prompt medical attention critical.

Dr. Anaab-Bisi was speaking at the launch of the pink October campaign month which seeks to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage screening and early detection, and ultimately contribute to better treatment outcomes and reduced deaths from the disease.

He said the hospital would throughout the month provide free breast screening for clients who visit the facility, as part of efforts to promote early detection.

Clinical Oncologist and representative of the Breast Society of Ghana, Dr. Juanita Brehua-Nkansah, also encouraged the public to become familiar with what is normal for their breasts and to seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual changes.

The Tema West Municipal Health Director, Dr. Mrs.Mercy Obrempong Owusu, stressed that breast cancer is not exclusively a women’s health concern.

She noted that health facilities also receive male patients with breast cancer, making awareness and screening a responsibility for everyone.
