Gov’t Evacuates Over 137 Ghanaians From Abidjan; 4 Dead, Others Injured.

The Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere, led a government delegation to welcome the first batch of Ghanaians evacuated from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, following building demolitions.

Over 100 returnees arrived at dawn 3am on Friday, June 12, 2026, and are currently stationed at the Central Regional Coordinating Council in Cape Coast.

In an interview with reporter Nyansapow Timothyof, the leader of the returnees, Mr. Samuel Otoo, explained that several dozen homes and properties were destroyed, leaving residents to dig through the rubble for their belongings.

According to him, four people were confirmed dead and several others injured during the demolition exercise carried out by security forces.

“We are happy we are home and thank President John Mahama for evacuating us to Ghana,” Mr. Otoo said.

The returnees’ leader further appealed for government support.

The Regional Minister assured them of government support and appealed to individuals and organizations for assistance.

Mr. Kwesi Dawood, Central Regional Director of NADMO, addressing the media, explained the assessment being conducted and the roadmap for disaster management being put in place.

He confirmed that a second batch of evacuees is on its way to the central region.

He appealed to NGOs to support, especially minors and women.

The returnees will go through routine health checks before being handed over to District Chief Executives to be sent to their various homes.
