47% SHS Students, 31% JHS Pupils Reportedly Engaged In Drug Abuse.
Concerns have been raised over the reported high rate of drug abuse among young people, with statistics indicating that 47 percent of Senior High School students and 31 percent of Junior High School pupils are engaged in drug abuse.
The worrying trend has heightened calls for intensified education and community-based interventions to prevent substance abuse among children and the youth.
As part of activities ahead of World Heart Day on September 29, Daylight Events, in collaboration with the Tema West Education Directorate and public schools in the municipality, went on a campaign float through parts of Tema to sensitise residents to the dangers of drug abuse and its potential impact on heart health.
The Director of Events at Daylight Events, Nana Yaw Opoku Danso, said the campaign is aimed at reaching more young people with education on the dangers of substance abuse.
He disclosed that the initiative will soon be extended to Senior High Schools, urging young people to abstain from drugs and make choices that will safeguard their health and future.
The Tema West Municipal Education Director, Mrs. Sophia Ako, also advised students to stay away from drugs, stressing that abstaining from substance abuse is essential to achieving a healthy and successful future.
Some of the students who participated in the campaign said the initiative had exposed them to the dangers associated with drug abuse and would help them make informed decisions about their health and future.
