Private Schools Call For Category A SHS Placement Consideration For Their BECE Candidates.
As the Ghana Education Service prepares to place successful BECE candidates into Senior High Schools across the country, concerns are emerging from private school operators over the allocation of Category A schools.
The current placement arrangement gives public school students an advantage in accessing Category A Senior High Schools, with a 15 percent consideration in the placement system.
In the Ashanti Region, the Principal of Hope American International School, Samuel Atta Boateng, is appealing to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to consider extending a portion of the Category A placement opportunity to qualified students from private schools.
Speaking to journalists at the school’s graduation ceremony, he proposed that between five and ten percent of the allocation could be reserved for deserving private school students who perform strongly in the BECE.
Mr. Boateng argued that many students from private schools also excel in the BECE and should therefore not be disadvantaged solely because they attended private institutions.
He believes the placement system should focus more on academic performance and merit while ensuring that deserving candidates from both public and private schools have a fair opportunity to gain admission to Category A Senior High Schools.
Meanwhile, a board member of Hope American International School, Apostle Solomon Boakye Agyemang, has raised concerns about what he describes as inadequate parental supervision of children.
His comments come amid growing concerns over indiscipline and misconduct among students in some schools.
He urged parents to take greater responsibility for the upbringing and discipline of their children instead of leaving the responsibility entirely to teachers and school authorities.
