Two Suspected National Security Operatives, One Other Arrested For Alleged Extortion At Galamsey Site

Two self-proclaimed National Security operatives and a sprayer have been arrested by the Central North Regional Police Command for allegedly extorting money from illegal miners at Asamang, a community in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region.

The suspects have been identified as Nana Kwame, popularly known as “Money Fresh,” Daniel Amoako Arthur, alias “Rasta,” and one Cobbinah from Assin Bereku.

Police retrieved one locally manufactured pistol and one foreign-made pistol from the suspects.

The suspects admitted the weapons were confiscated from a galamsey site and had since been kept in their possession. Additional items retrieved included knives, live cartridges, and a taser.

Central North Regional Police Commander, DCOP Abraham Acquaye, stated that the suspects failed to produce any valid identification to support their claim of being National Security officers.

He revealed that residents of Asamang, who had monitored the suspects’ suspicious activities for weeks, apprehended them during one of their alleged extortion operations.

A scuffle ensued during the confrontation, prompting the community to call in the police.
Due to proximity, the suspects were initially handed over to the New Edubiase Police in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region.

After preliminary investigations, they were transferred to the Central North Regional Police Command Headquarters in Assin Fosu.

The three are facing charges including possession of firearms without lawful authority and extortion.

They were arraigned before the Assin Kyekyewere Circuit Court, where their pleas were not taken.

However, they have been granted bail today and are expected to reappear in court on September 4, 2024.
