Chiefs Declare Youth Will Engage In Galamsey Due To Lack Of Benefits From Asanko Mines

Chiefs of Manso Mpatuam, Bontefufuo, Tetrem, Bonteso, Akataniase and Aboabo Tetekaaso have stated that their youth will engage in “galamsey” (illegal mining) to earn a living.
This declaration comes because the local youth aren’t getting job opportunities or benefits from Asanko mines operating in their area.
Yet, the company has been involved in incidents leading to the deaths of community members through military actions.
Speaking on behalf of the chiefs, Nana Owusu Ababio Akataniase hene, emphasized that Asanko mines is “playing with them” by not creating job opportunities for the youth while using force against citizens.
He made this statement when the Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene and his delegation met the leaders and citizens of Mpatuam to “smoke a peace pipe.”
The situation underscores growing tensions between local communities and mining companies in the region, particularly over issues of employment, security, and the impact of mining operations on local livelihoods.
End.
