Be Ambassadors Of Peace And Development— Asiedu Nketia Urges Traditional Leaders

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called on traditional leaders to act as ambassadors of peace by promoting unity and harmony within their communities.

Speaking on behalf of the President John Dramani Mahama at the Effutuakwa Tutukese Festival held in Assin Fosu on Saturday, Mr Asiedu Nketia said persistent chieftaincy disputes and internal conflicts slow down development, as government resources are often diverted to deploy security personnel instead of funding infrastructure and social services.

“When chiefs fight, it is the community that suffers,” he stressed, urging traditional leaders to prioritise peace and stability as a foundation for development.

Addressing concerns raised by chiefs over the poor state of inner roads in Assin Fosu, Mr Asiedu Nketia assured them that the issue would be brought to the attention of President John Dramani Mahama, reaffirming the NDC’s commitment to responding to community needs.

Meanwhile, New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant and former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, appealed to residents to rise above partisan politics, noting that unity remains critical to development.

He emphasised that chiefs must remain politically neutral to foster peace and progress in their communities. Mr Agyapong also commended the Effutuakwa traditional leaders for reviving the Tutukese Festival after 40 years, describing the move as a strong commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

In his remarks, the Paramount Chief of the Effutuakwa Traditional Council, Okumanini Baffour Asare Kyeahene II, said effective healthcare delivery and sanitation remain top priorities for the community.

He outlined plans to improve access to medical facilities and intensify environmental cleanliness campaigns to promote good health and enhance the overall quality of life of residents.
