Waja Condemns Attack On Journalist Richard Ohene Kwame

The Wasa Amenfi Journalists Association (WAJA) strongly condemns the unprovoked attack on our colleague, Richard Ohene Kwame aka King Pogasty, which occurred on 28th January 2026.

In a democratic society, journalists must be allowed to perform their duties freely without fear of assault, intimidation, or destruction of their working equipment.

Attacks of this nature violate press freedom and undermine democratic principles.

WAJA therefore calls on the Ghana Police Service to thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice.

What Happened

On 28th January 2026, during the NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s thank-you tour of the Wasa Amenfi East Municipality, our colleague King Pogasty, CEO of Animonyam TV, was allegedly attacked by an NDC communication team member, Andy Sokpe, at Wasa Akropong.

While carrying out his professional duties, Pogasty was struck, causing his mobile phone to fall.

When he attempted to question the incident, Andy Sokpe reportedly became aggressive and smashed the journalist’s phone and other working equipment beyond repair.

WAJA has consistently advocated for media freedom and professional conduct.

We therefore urge the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to caution its members against arrogance and intolerance toward journalists, which is completely unacceptable.

We stand united in defense of press freedom. An attack on a journalist is an attack on democracy, and WAJA will continue to demand accountability and justice.
