National Timber Monitoring Team Impounds Over 15 Timber Trucks, Shuts Down Illegal Sawmill.

The Chairman of the National Timber Monitoring Team, Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku, in collaboration with officials from the Forestry Commission of Ghana, has intercepted and impounded over 15 cargo trucks loaded with timber in a major operation to curb illegal logging activities.

The operation was carried out in several communities including Konkontreso, Mabang, and Akwasiase.

Speaking after the exercise, Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku explained that the operation forms part of efforts by the monitoring team and the Forestry Commission to clamp down on illegal timber harvesting and transportation, which continues to threaten Ghana’s forest reserves.

He noted that many timber operators transport wood without the necessary permits and documentation, an act that undermines the country’s forest conservation laws.

During the operation, the team also shut down an illegal sawmill operating at Konkontreso.

According to Alhaji Doku, the facility was processing timber without authorization from the Forestry Commission.

He therefore advised individuals and companies who intend to engage in the timber business to first acquire the proper permits and documentation from the Forestry Commission before starting operations.

Alhaji Doku further warned that the National Timber Monitoring Team will continue its surveillance and enforcement activities across affected communities to ensure that illegal logging is brought under control and Ghana’s forest resources are protected.
