Buoho Market Demolition Sparks Tension Between Traders And Assembly.

The Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly has carried out a demolition exercise today at 2 AM at the Buoho Market, leaving many traders devastated after their goods were exposed to theft while as sleep.

The exercise, according to the Assembly, forms part of plans to convert the area into a lorry terminal to help reduce traffic congestion along the busy stretch.

However, the action has triggered strong reactions from affected traders, who say their concerns have been ignored.

Prior to the demolition, the Assembly had issued a deadline of April 4, 2026, for traders to relocate to a newly constructed market.

Despite the notice, many traders refused to move, citing unresolved sanitation and poor road access at the new site.

According to them, these issues made the place unsuitable for business operations.

Speaking after the demolition, some aggrieved traders expressed frustration, insisting that the Assembly failed to address their concerns before taking such drastic action.

They further revealed that traditional authorities in Buoho have invoked curses on the new market land, contributing to their reluctance to relocate.

S.K. Adomako, Special Aide to the District Chief Executive and DRIP Coordinator, who led the exercise, defended the Assembly’s decision.

He explained that the move was necessary to prevent the newly constructed market from deteriorating.

He also assured that efforts were underway to fix the sanitation and road challenges raised by the traders.

On his part, Nana Baffuor, the Abusuapanin of Buoho and custodian of the land where the new market is situated, stated that the facility would not be opened until proper planning and allocation processes are completed.

He emphasised that he and his family are open to dialogue with the Assembly to resolve the impasse.

End.
