Tricycle Operators’ Association To Stage Nationwide Protest Over Closure Of Dump Site.

The Tricycle Operators’ Association of Ghana has announced plans for a nationwide demonstration to protest the lack of designated waste disposal sites and the recent closure of the Tambourine dumpsite at McCarthy Hill, Weija.
National Security authorities shut down the Tambourine dumpsite approximately one week ago, citing concerns that congestion from tricycles was causing severe traffic disruptions.
The closure has dealt a major setback to tricycle operators engaged in waste collection services across the capital.
In an interview, the President of the Tricycle Operators’ Association of Ghana, Mr. Kwame Frimpong, stated that members are facing severe operational difficulties following the closure of the McCarthy Hill facility.
“Operators can no longer access disposal sites to offload waste collected from customers,” he said, adding that the scarcity of adequate dumping sites within Accra and its surrounding communities has paralyzed their work.
He further appealed to the government to support Zoomlion in operationalizing the Mallam disposal site, or to temporarily reopen the McCarthy Hill dumpsite for waste disposal.
He warned that failure to act would result in refuse accumulating across the environment and could trigger a public health crisis.
During a media visit to the Tambourine dumpsite, journalists observed a team fumigating the refuse site.
Speaking to the media, the team leader, Nii Ayi, dismissed claims that tricycle operators were responsible for traffic congestion on the Mallam highway.
He argued that the persistent gridlock stems from deteriorating road conditions, and urged authorities to address the numerous potholes at Mallam Junction instead.
