Uncollected Refuse After National Clean-Up Sparks Health Fears In Sekondi-Takoradi.

Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi are calling on the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to urgently evacuate heaps of refuse left on streets and roadsides following the nationwide National Clean-Up Exercise held last Friday and Saturday.
The exercise, which was conducted under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama to improve environmental sanitation across the country, saw residents, government institutions, security agencies, and corporate organizations clear choked drains, sweep streets, weed overgrown areas, and remove large quantities of waste from public spaces.
However, as of Monday, many of the heaps of refuse gathered during the exercise remain uncollected in several parts of the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, raising concerns among residents over the potential health implications.
Some residents who spoke to our reporter Nana Fynn expressed disappointment over the delay in clearing the waste, saying the refuse has already begun emitting an unpleasant odour.
According to them, the heaps of rubbish are attracting flies and other pests, creating conditions that could lead to the outbreak of diseases if immediate action is not taken.
They also warned that if rainfall occurs before the refuse is evacuated, the waste could be washed back into the drains, causing fresh blockages and increasing the risk of flooding.
