Cow Meat Shortage Hits Kumasi Abattoir Over Burkina Faso Border Closure – Chief Bucher.

The National Vice Chief and Ashanti Regional Chief Butcher at the Kumasi Abattoir, Alhaji Ibrahim Wahab Tikumah, has revealed that the country is facing a serious shortage of cow meat following the closure of the Burkina Faso border by the President of Burkina Faso.

Angel Tv News reporter Bismark Mensah had an interview at the Kumasi Abattoir, Alhaji Tikumah said for the past several months, butchers have not received cattle from Burkina Faso, a situation that has drastically reduced the supply and production of cow meat in Kumasi and other parts of the country.

He explained that the Kumasi Abattoir, which serves as a major meat distribution point for the Ashanti Region and beyond, is now operating far below its normal capacity.

According to him, about 70% of the cow meat consumed in Ghana comes from neighbouring countries, with Burkina Faso being the major supplier.

He therefore stressed that the continued closure of the border will have dire consequences for consumers and butchers alike.

Alhaji Tikumah appealed to the Government of Ghana to urgently engage the President of Burkina Faso to reopen the border to allow the free movement of cattle into the country.

He warned that if the issue is not resolved before the Christmas festivities, the price of meat will increase sharply, making it difficult for ordinary Ghanaians to enjoy the celebrations.

He added that many butchers are already struggling to sustain their businesses, and some may be forced to close down if the shortage persists.
