Residents of Nwiso in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region are living in fear after a violent attack by a group of armed men believed to be linked to a mining company and foreign nationals.
The attackers reportedly burned motorbikes, destroyed property, and briefly held a traditional leader hostage, leaving the entire community in shock.
Tension remains high in Nwiso after the armed men, said to be soldiers, stormed the community and caused destruction.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers arrived unexpectedly, burning motorbikes, destroying drinks and cash, and chasing residents who fled for safety.
Some residents say they lost valuable property and large sums of money during the attack.
In a disturbing development, the Kyidomhene of the area was reportedly taken hostage during the incident.
Although he was later released, the situation has left both the chief and residents deeply shaken.
The Chief of Nwiso, Osabarima Yeboah Osei Hwedie II, has condemned the attack and described the incident as unacceptable.
He says the people are living in fear and is calling on government and security agencies to act quickly and ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, tension is also growing over alleged mining activities in the area, as residents strongly oppose any attempt by the company to operate there.
Residents claim the attackers were acting under the direction of foreign nationals and linked to Akroma Gold Company Limited, which they accuse of forcefully entering the community and threatening locals.
The Akwansera Hene of Akyem Kotoku, Oberempong Kwame Akomeah, has warned that the company must compensate affected residents or risk further confrontation.
He is also appealing to authorities to strengthen security in the area to prevent further violence.
