Road At Biriwa-Cape Coast-Tarkordzi- Accra Highway Submerged After Alleged Landfill Works, Drivers Stranded.

Commuters along the Biriwa- Cape Coast, Takoradzi–Accra Highway faced severe delays on Monday, 18 May 2026, after the Biriwa section near the police checkpoint was inundated with floodwater, leaving vehicles stranded and causing long traffic.
The inundation occurred early this morning when floodwater covered the roadway close to the Biriwa Police Check Point, shutting down vehicular movement on the affected stretch.
Local residents who discovered the flooding at dawn alerted the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), prompting an emergency response.
Eyewitnesses and residents blamed nearby construction work for altering the flow of water.
They say an investor, identified as Mr. Frimpong, has been filling a low lying area near the police checkpoint for an unspecified project, a practice they allege weakened the drainage and embankment and contributed to the flooding.
Central Regional Minister Hon. Ekow Okyere Eduamoah Panyin has directed regional NADMO teams, backed by machinery, to clear the affected bridge and reopen blocked drainage channels so water can flow normally and the road can be reinstated for traffic.
“I woke up to water already on the road. Cars were stuck and horns were everywhere.
It looks like the drainage has been blocked,” said one resident lives at the scene spoke to Angelnews.
Madam Janet Quansah, a special aide to the regional minister who attended the scene, said authorities were assessing damage and coordinating removal of debris and silt to restore passage.
Meanwhile, minister is taking urgent steps to ensure motorists are not stranded. We have requested heavy equipment to clear the drainage and stabilize the embankment,” she said.
Drivers at the scene described chaotic conditions and one driver whose vehicle stalled in the flood told Onua News that commuters faced long delays and a stressfuly.
Nyansapow Timothy, Douglas Oyiboh reporting for Angel News from Biriwa, said water still covered part of the road at the time of filing and that crews were on site working to relieve traffic pressure.
Angel Reporters could not immediately reach Mr. Frimpong for comment because he’s know where to be found. .
