Mankesim Police Arrest 3 People Over Momo Fraud; Warn Traders To Be Vigilant.
The Mankessim Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Hayford Alave, has called on traders to be vigilant whenever they are conducting mobile money transactions.
According to him, the police through intelligence have apprehended three suspects over MoMo fraud cases, and investigations are still ongoing.
He described the activities of fraudsters as a serious threat to traders in the area.
ASP Alave said intelligence gathered indicates that fraudsters have centred their activities in business areas, especially marketplaces.
He is therefore appealing to business people, particularly those engaged in electronic transactions,to be extra careful.
This advice came when the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, engaged traders at Mankessim in a public education exercise.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications,Madam Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, debunked the myth that telecom towers cause cancer, while highlighting that the recent poor network experienced in parts of the Central Region is not from the telcos’ system, but is rather due to ongoing road construction and galamsey activities destroying fibre optic cables.
This comes on the back of complaints by many residents in the region about poor internet connectivity and poor network.
Responding to concerns at the Mankessim market, the CEO explained that the poor network is not a result of a fault from the telecommunication companies.
According to her, the ongoing Big Push road construction projects and activities of illegal mining are destroying fibre optic cables, affecting network quality in the region.
Madam Owusu-Ankomah has therefore appealed to residents to exercise patience as efforts are being made to fix the problem.
Some traders at the event also urged the telecos to conduct thorough background checks before employing people, because they believe some employees conspire with fraudsters to dupe illiterate persons.
