Assin Fosu Police Rescue Woman From Mob After Alleged Fake Currency Trading At New Market

A swift intervention by the Assin Fosu District Police Command has saved a 33-year-old woman from being lynched by furious traders at the Assin Fosu New Market after she was allegedly caught transacting with counterfeit currency.

The suspect, who identified herself as Mary Kortey also known as Akweley, and claims to be from Kwashieman in Accra, reportedly attempted to purchase foodstuffs and other goods using fake GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes.

According to eyewitnesses, multiple traders realized they had all received fake notes from the same woman, prompting them to confront and physically assault her.

She was reportedly beaten severely before police arrived to disperse the angry crowd and rescue her.

A search conducted on the suspect led to the discovery of fake currency amounting to GH¢1,900.

Traders told Rich FM News that this incident marks the third time the woman has used counterfeit money at the market, casting doubt on her previous claims of innocence.

Sources say when arrested, the suspect feigned mental illness, undressing and behaving erratically at the police station in what some believe was an attempt to avoid prosecution.

During the initial interrogation by the police, ASP Rosemond Duncan, the Assin Fosu District Crime Officer, explained that the suspect alleged the counterfeit cash was given to her by her boyfriend, identified only as Evans, a Nigerian national who is on the run.

The Assin Fosu District Police Command has launched a full investigation into the case.
