Restore Chiefs’ Authority To Help End Galamsey – Twifo Atimorkwa Omanhene Tell Gov’t

The Omanhene of the Atti-Morkwa Traditional Area in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region, Nana Oseadeyo Kwesi Kenin IV, has appealed to the government to restore the traditional powers of chiefs, enabling them to combat illegal mining (galamsey) effectively in the country.

According to Nana Kwesi Kenin IV, many chiefs are aware of illegal mining activities taking place in their jurisdictions.

However, their inability to compel offenders to appear before traditional authorities has weakened their efforts to stop the menace. He believes that restoring the authority of chiefs will significantly help curb galamsey nationwide.

The Omanhene made the appeal during the 2025 Akwasidae Festival held at Morkwa.

He stated that part of the festival’s objective is to raise support for the construction of classrooms and dormitory facilities for Morkwa Senior High School.

Sanaahene of the Atti-Morkwa Traditional Area, who also serves as the Chief of Asamoakurom, Nana Oboaman Ansah Apenteng II, called on traditional leaders to promote unity within the area.

He stressed that unity is essential for development, noting that without it, communities would struggle to achieve progress in key areas such as road networks and educational facilities.

The Member of Parliament for the Twifo Atti-Morkwa Constituency Hon Theophilus T.D.. Vondee highlighted that, due to effective economic management, several development policies are being implemented in the constituency.

These include improvements in educational infrastructure, road construction, and the expansion of electricity supply.

He added that President John Dramani Mahama is committed to transforming Ghana’s economy and advancing the nation to a higher level of development.
