NRSA Educates Mototists On Speed Limits In Joint Exercise With Police

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in the Greater Accra Region has embarked on a road safety education exercise aimed at sensitising drivers and motorists on speed limits and other traffic regulations to help reduce road crashes and save lives.

The exercise, undertaken in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, targeted drivers and motorists plying the Kpone–Dawhenya stretch of road.

Speaking to the media, the Acting Greater Accra Regional Head of the NRSA, Felix Owusu, outlined the approved speed limits under Ghana’s road traffic regulations. He explained that the maximum speed limit for highways is 80 kilometres per hour, 50 kilometres per hour in urban areas, 30 kilometres per hour in commercial zones, and 100 kilometres per hour on motorways.

Mr. Owusu, however, clarified that although the Road Traffic Regulations permit a maximum of 100 kilometres per hour on motorways and 80 kilometres per hour on highways, commercial drivers are restricted to a maximum of 80 kilometres per hour even when driving on motorways.

He also cautioned drivers against dangerous practices such as wrongful overtaking, distracted driving, fatigue driving and other traffic infractions, which he said remain major contributors to road accidents.

Mr. Owusu further appealed to passengers to take an active interest in their safety by politely cautioning drivers who engage in reckless driving, stressing that such interventions could save lives.

He noted that the Authority has observed that many drivers do not adequately understand road signs and line markings, a situation he attributed to poor driving education.

He therefore urged the public to enrol in accredited driving schools instead of relying on informal training from unqualified individuals.

On his part, the Prampram Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Commander, ASP Inusah Issah, noted that road crashes during the Christmas season are largely a result of driver negligence rather than the festivities themselves.

He appealed to motorists to exercise patience, avoid speeding and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users during the festive period.
