Angry Biriwa Chief Fishermen Call For Landing Site Following Destructive Sea Storm

The chief fishermen of Biriwa have urgently demanded the construction of a landing site (harbour) to protect their canoes from destruction during storms.

Biriwa, a fishing community in the Central Region under the Mfantseman Municipality, is well known for its fishing activities and densely populated community.

A press conference was held on Wednesday, 4th February 2026, to address the continuous threat posed by the absence of a landing site.

On Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, several canoes were carried away by rough seas during a storm.

According to Nana Kofi Afomoa (V), Chief Fisherman of Biriwa, in an interview with Douglas Oyiboh Amponsah the fishermen in the town are suffering due to the lack of a landing beach.

He explained that after fishing, their canoes are left floating on the sea because they have nowhere safe to dock.

He appealed to the Ministry of Fisheries, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), NADMO, and the government to heed their plea and provide assistance.

He lamented that neighboring towns have already received landing sites, despite Biriwa having greater fishing activity than those towns.

Several elder chief fishermen also expressed concern, stressing that their work is at risk because some canoes fail to return with fish due to the lack of a proper landing beach.

They added that some fishermen are forced to travel to distant locations to fish because of the high waves in the area.
