Rising Number Of Child Hawkers In Ashanti Region Sparks Safety Fears As Residents Demand Urgent Action.

Concerns are mounting in the Ashanti Region over the growing number of underage hawkers trading in traffic, with residents warning that the practice is putting the lives of children at serious risk.

According to accounts from community members, the number of child hawkers operating on busy roads has increased sharply in recent months.

Many of the children, some as young as eight, are seen weaving between moving vehicles daily to sell items.

Residents say the situation has already led to tragic consequences. “Cars are knocking some of them down.

Some have been left with permanent disabilities, but authorities show no concern,” one worried resident told Sompa News.

Community members expressed frustration that parents and relevant authorities have not taken decisive steps to address the issue, despite the obvious danger to the children.

“It’s about time we prioritize education for these children.

They should be in classrooms studying hard, not on the streets risking their lives. If we don’t act now, they will grow up to become irresponsible adults,” another resident warned.

The residents are now calling on NGOs, government, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and child welfare agencies to intervene immediately.

They want all underage children trading in traffic removed from the streets and enrolled in school or placed in apprenticeship programs to learn vocational skills.
