Blue Water Guard Officer Drowns During Anti-Galamsey Operation In Birim North.

A Blue Water Guard officer, Adams Abubakar, has drowned in the Pra river at Akyem Amenam in the Birim North District during an operation to combat illegal mining activities.

The incident is reported to have occurred while the officer and his team were engaged in a confrontation with suspected illegal miners, commonly known as galamsey operators.

In the course of the operation, Adams Abubakar about 35 years allegedly fell into the river and drowned.

His body has since been retrieved and deposited at the Abirem Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Police in the area have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident to establish the exact cause of death and any possible involvement of other persons.

The Blue Water Guard initiative forms part of government efforts to protect Ghana’s rivers from pollution caused by illegal mining.

The death of the officer highlights the growing risks faced by personnel in the fight against illegal mining, as authorities continue to intensify efforts to clamp down on galamsey activities across the country.

Speaking to the media, spokeperson for the Blue Water Guards, Francis Lartsu he explained what happened.
