Mamponteng Traders Blast MCE Over Abandoned Market, Reject New 24-Hour Economy Project.

Aggrieved traders at Mamponteng in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region are angry with the Municipal Chief Executive over what they describe as neglect of their plight.

The traders say they have been left to operate under high-tension power lines for years, despite the health risks, while a market project meant for them remains abandoned and uncompleted.

According to them, several colleagues have died, with others currently hospitalized, from what they believe is radiation exposure from the high-tension poles.

“The MCE, Hon. Joseph Amankwa, doesn’t think about our health. We have cried for years, but nothing has been done. We are dying slowly under these high-tension lines,” a traders lamented.

Their frustration deepened after authorities yesterday cut sod for a new 24-hour economy market in the area, instead of completing the abandoned one.

“We thought the NDC government would use the 24-hour economy policy to complete our abandoned market. But they have rather cut sod for a new one. What happens to us?” another trader questioned.

The traders say the situation has already collapsed their businesses. “Most of us have lost all our capital. We are selling in dangerous conditions, and customers are afraid to come here because of the high-tension,” one trader added.

They are now appealing to the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly to prioritize their safety and livelihoods.

“We are calling on the Assembly to come and complete the abandoned market for us as a matter of urgency. We are losing our lives and our businesses,” the traders stressed.
