KMA Resumes Phase 2 Demolition At Asafo Interchange Amid Tight Security.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, has this morning resumed the second phase of its demolition exercise at the Asafo Interchange and its surrounding enclaves.

The operation, which was suspended weeks ago following violent clashes between the KMA taskforce and affected traders, is this time proceeding peacefully under heavy security presence.

Officials of the Assembly, backed by police and military personnel, were on site as early as 6am to pull down unauthorized kiosks, containers, and wooden structures that had sprung up around the interchange.

According to KMA, the exercise is aimed at decongesting the area, improving vehicular and pedestrian movement, and restoring order at one of Kumasi’s busiest transport terminals.

Speaking to the media during the exercise, the Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang, popularly known as King Zuba said the exercise has been smooth compared to the first attempt.

He noted that the Asafo Interchange had become a haven for criminal activities, especially at night.

“This is a place where bad and criminal activities go on. This exercise will bring relief to residents of Kumasi because it was really affecting them at night when criminals chase them. We cannot allow a few people to make life unbearable for the majority,” the Mayor stated.

Hon. Ofori Agyemang assured that the Assembly will enforce the bye-laws strictly to prevent traders and developers from returning to the cleared areas.
