Residents Of Berekum Urge Government To Crack Down On Mining Activities In Berekum East And West.

The Berekum Citizens Association is urging the government to crack down on mining activities in the Berekum east and west Traditional Area’s.

‎The Berekum Citizens Association urging the government to immediately crack down on all mining activities in the Berekum Traditional Area, particularly at Benkasa and Amomaso.
‎

Addressing the media, KOFI DIABOUR KYERE says the group is concerned about the impact of the activities of these miners, whether responsible community mining or galamsey – on water bodies, aquatic life, farmlands, and the health and environmental risks associated with their operations.
‎

The group says the total land area of the Berekum Traditional Area is relatively small, and that mining activities could, within a short period, destroy the few farmlands available to the people.

‎The Abusuapanin of the Amomaso community, ABDUL KARIM KYEREMEH, says that through the swift intervention of the Bono Regional Minister, excavators and other mining equipment were confiscated by the security agencies about two weeks ago.

However, he says the miners have returned with even more equipment than before and their activities have not spared the  Amoma river and other water bodies have been destroyed, while farmlands and forests continue to be degraded with impunity.
