Western Region Records Over 23,000 People Living With HIV — Ghana AIDS Commission.

The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed that more than 23,000 people are estimated to be living with HIV in the Western Region.

The disclosure was made by the Acting Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission in the Western Region, Antonio Francis, during a stakeholders’ engagement on the status of HIV in the region.

According to the 2025 HIV Estimates and Projections Report prepared by the Ghana AIDS Commission, new HIV infections in the region have reduced slightly. However, Mr. Francis said the number of new infections remains a major concern.

He explained that the figures indicate that new HIV infections continue to occur in the region, warning that persistent new infections could undermine efforts to end AIDS by 2030.

The Acting Technical Coordinator expressed particular concern about people between the ages of 15 and 24, saying HIV infections among the age group are becoming increasingly significant both in the Western Region and nationally.

He called for more targeted preventive programmes for adolescents, young girls and young women.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Lawyer FF Faidoo speaking at the engagement, said the metropolis recorded the highest number of people living with HIV among districts in the Western Region, with 4,198 cases.

He said the figure was followed by Tarkwa Nsuaem, Prestea Huni Valley, Wassa Amenfi and other districts, with the Wassa Amenfi East area recording about 2,112 cases.

The MCE attributed the relatively high HIV figures in Sekondi-Takoradi to the cosmopolitan nature of the metropolis, which attracts a large number of migrants from different parts of the country and beyond.
