Nkukua Buoho R/C School In Danger: Massive Refuse Dump Behind School Fence Chokes Pupils With Stench.

Academic work at Nkukua Buoho R/C Basic School at Buoho in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region is facing a severe health crisis as a huge refuse dump site located just behind the school’s fence wall continues to emit a strong, offensive odour.

What should be a safe haven for learning has now become a source of worry for pupils, teachers, and parents, as the stench from the dump engulfs classrooms daily, making concentration in class extremely difficult.

The caretaker of the dump site, popularly known as Bro Yaw, admitted in an interview that the refuse dump indeed produces a terrible smell and poses serious health risks to the school children.

According to him, the situation is getting out of hand.

He noted that the dump attracts swarms of flies, cockroaches and other disease-carrying insects which invade the school compound and classrooms, exposing pupils and teachers to cholera, typhoid, malaria and other respiratory infections.

The situation is affecting attendance and performance, as some pupils complain of headaches and nausea due to the persistent bad smell.

Parents are also livid, describing the siting of the dump behind the school as reckless and insensitive to the wellbeing of children.

They are therefore appealing passionately to the Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly, the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to as a matter of urgency evacuate the refuse, fumigate the area and relocate the dump site far away from the school to save the lives and future of the pupils.
