Floating Taxi Drivers Block Ashaiman Main Road Over Alleged Task Force Harassment.

Some commercial taxi drivers operating in Ashaiman earlier today blocked the main Ashaiman Traffic road in the municipality, protesting what they describe as persistent harassment and extortion by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly’s task force.

The drivers claim they have been issued stickers and permits by the Assembly, as well as authorization from the police to pick up passengers along the roads.

However, they allege that members of the Assembly’s task force continue to arrest and demand GH¢300 from them whenever they are caught picking up passengers.

According to the drivers, those who refuse to pay the money have their vehicle keys taken.

The situation escalated today when one of the drivers was arrested and had his keys taken away after he allegedly refused to pay the GH¢300 demanded by the task force.

In protest, the drivers blocked the Ashaiman traffic road leading to the Presby Junction, resulting in heavy vehicular congestion in the area.

Authorities later intervened to restore calm and ease the traffic situation.

The drivers say the alleged harassment has persisted for a long time and are appealing to the appropriate authorities to intervene and resolve the matter.
