MoMo Fraudsters Target Judge Shortly After He Rules On Fraud Case.

The Assin Fosu District Court Judge, His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, has expressed shock after suspected mobile money (MoMo) fraudsters attempted to defraud him shortly after he had sentenced an accused person in a MoMo fraud case.

The judge recounted that the incident occurred after court had risen and he was preparing to leave the court premises.

According to him, he received a call from an unknown person who claimed to have mistakenly transferred money into his account.

He said the caller’s claim was accompanied by a message purportedly from a telecommunications service provider, indicating that the money had been transferred to his account.

However, after making further checks, the judge said he realised that the message was fraudulent and that the caller was attempting to deceive him.

“The person called and said he had mistakenly sent money to my account. I checked and there was a message purporting to be from the telecommunications service. After further checks, I realised they were fraudsters because that was one of their modes of operation,” he said.

Reflecting on the incident, His Worship Iliasu, in a humorous remark, said the activities of the fraudsters appeared to spare no one, regardless of their position or status in society.

“These guys show no respect to anybody, no matter your status in society,” he said humorously.

The judge said he was particularly shocked by the incident because it occurred immediately after he had presided over a MoMo fraud case.

In that case, the court sentenced the accused person to a fine of 7,500 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢9,000.

His Worship Iliasu also expressed concern over what he described as the increasing incidence of electronic transaction-related offences within the Assin Fosu area.

He called on the Ghana Police Service and relevant cybersecurity authorities to intensify efforts to combat mobile money fraud and other electronic transaction-related crimes.

His comments came while ruling on a kidnapping case involving four suspects in connection with the abduction of 30-year-old Bismark Amoh, who was reportedly held captive in Kumasi from September 6 to 11, 2026, and has also been accused of involvement in a separate MoMo fraud case.

In another related case, the court sentenced Prince Mensah to a fine of GH¢9,000 after he was convicted of defrauding a mobile money vendor, Alice Fofie, of GH¢37,000.

The judge said the sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to others who may engage in similar offences.
