FDA Destroys 28 Bales Of Unsafe Diapers At Shai Hills.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has destroyed 28 bales of diapers seized from the port for failing to meet the required safety and regulatory standards.
The exercise, carried out at a disposal site at Shai Hills, forms part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to prevent non-compliant products from entering the public domain.
Senior Regulatory Officer at the FDA, Samuel Otoo, said the diapers were found poorly packaged and exposed to moisture, dust, oil and pests, creating a potential risk of fungal and bacterial contamination.
He said the importer said it was tissue papers but upon further checks at the port the security personnels realised it’s unsafe diapers
He explained that the products were particularly concerning because they are used by babies, who are a sensitive group.
Mr. Otoo said the seized diapers, contained in a 40-foot container, were loaded into an incinerator for safe destruction.
He stressed that the FDA’s action was not simply a disposal exercise but part of its regulatory mandate to protect consumers from potentially unsafe products.
Mr. Otoo also disclosed that the FDA would take regulatory action against the persons responsible for bringing the products into the country.
He said the owners of the seized products would also be required to bear the cost of the destruction, describing the safe disposal exercise as expensive.
The FDA has consequently advised the public to purchase only registered and regulated diapers and other consumer products.
