Safety Is Non-Negotiable Minerals Commission CEO Warns Mining Firms.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Andrews Tandoh, has warned that poor safety practices in mining can destroy decades of investment within 48 hours.

Speaking at a the Africa Mining Health and Safety Series in Takoradi, he said incidents such as tailings spills, fatal collapses, or child labour scandals can trigger investor panic, higher insurance costs, or even mine closures, affecting livelihoods and the economy.

He stressed that companies cutting corners on safety are building a mountain of liability that investors will avoid.

Mr. Tandoh highlighted the role of technology, including wearable devices that monitor workers health in real time, but noted that data must be used for predictive analysis, not just reporting.

He added that companies are fully responsible for contractors actions, warning that violations could put mining permits at risk.

Meanwhile, Dr. Eric Stemn, Associate Professor and Head of Department at the University of Mines and Technology, underscored the central role of human capital in sustainability.

He noted that a safe miner ensures a safe and productive mine, while unsafe conditions threaten operations and profitability.

He added that mining, being high-risk, requires strong safety prioritization and praised the conference for bringing together regulators, industry players, communities, and academia to develop solutions.

Adding an international perspective, Caroline Diza, a participant from the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company said the challenges discussed at the conference are similar across countries despite different operating environments.

She noted that the mining sector remains a key driver of Zimbabwe’s economy, contributing significantly to employment and foreign exchange, and expressed optimism that knowledge-sharing between Ghanaian and Zimbabwean stakeholders will help address industry challenges.
