Biriwa-Cape Coast Highway Flood MCE Blames Illegal Land Filling, Orders Urgent Action.

He clarified that the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly did not issue any permit for the activity in question, stressing that any ongoing works on the land were unauthorized.
According to the MCE, preliminary information indicates that some traditional authorities (Nananom) allegedly sold portions of the land to an individual who began filling the area.
He explained that the Assembly initially instructed the individual to halt the project, and compliance was observed at the time.
However, he noted that subsequent unauthorized filling activities were later detected, which are believed to have contributed to the current flooding situation.
Hon.Eric Stanley Acquah assured the public that the Assembly will work in collaboration with relevant institutions to ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable in accordance with the law.
He further indicated that immediate intervention measures, including the deployment of machinery to improve drainage systems, are underway to restore free flow of water and ease vehicular movement along the highway.
The MCE emphasized that decisive steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, especially those linked to illegal land reclamation and unapproved development activities within the municipality.
Meanwhile, the Municipal NADMO Director, Mr. Abeiku Nyankson, stated that the exact individuals behind the alleged land filling are yet to be fully identified.
He noted that investigations are ongoing and assured that swift measures are being implemented to address the hazardous conditions created by the flooding.
He further cautioned the public against engaging in unauthorized land reclamation and illegal filling activities, warning that such practices pose serious environmental and infrastructural risks.
On the ground, some motorists, passengers, and residents expressed appreciation to the MCE, National Disaster Management Organisation, the Ghana Police Service, and other responding agencies for their swift intervention and efforts to restore safety and normalcy to the affected area.
