Fix Our Bridge Or We Vote Against You” – Santase Apire Residents Vow Massive Demo.
Residents of Santase Apire in the Kwadaso Municipality in the Ashanti region have vowed to hit the streets in a massive demonstration and vote against the NDC government if urgent action is not taken to fix an abandoned road and bridge near the Apire Police Post.
They say the project, which links Apire Old Town to the new settlement, has been abandoned for years, leaving the bridge in a deplorable state and the town roads in ruins.
Speaking to the media, frustrated residents revealed that the bridge has become a serious danger to both pedestrians and motorists.
According to them, the bridge floods anytime it rains, making it impossible to cross and putting lives at risk.
“The bridge has turned into a death trap. Children, market women and drivers struggle to cross every day.
When it rains, the water covers the entire bridge and we have recorded cases of people almost drowning. We are tired,” some residents lamented.
They added that the poor condition of the town roads is collapsing businesses in the area. Traders say customers can no longer access the market, while drivers charge extra fares because of the bad road.
The Assemblyman for the electoral area, Hon. Kofi Agyapong, confirmed the concerns of his people.
He disclosed that Jerecab Construction is the firm awarded the contract for the road and bridge project, but the contractor has abandoned the site without explanation.
“The road and the bridge are affecting us badly. Business is down, school children suffer, and pregnant women find it difficult to get to hospital. Jerecab Construction started the work and left.
We don’t know when they are coming back,” he stated.
Hon. Agyapong said several complaints have been made to the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly and other authorities, but nothing has been done.
The residents and the Assemblyman warned that if the government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways fail to act immediately, they will embark on a massive demonstration and vote against the ruling government in the next elections.
“We have suffered for too long. If no action is taken, we will demonstrate and make sure the authorities hear us.
We will also vote against any government that abandons us like this,” Hon. Agyapong added.
