Mixed Reactions In Ashanti Region Over Chairman Wontumi’s 20-Year Jail Term

Residents in the Ashanti Region have reacted to the 20-year jail sentence handed to the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

While some residents described the sentence as political and too harsh, others said he deserves it for his role in the destruction of natural resources.

Some residents who spoke to the Angel Tv  News reporter Bismark Mensah, said the 20-year jail term is excessive and amounts to political persecution.

According to them, the court’s decision is politically motivated and targeted at silencing a key opposition figure.

“The 20 years is too much, This is a political decision by the court. Chairman Wontumi has done a lot for the party and the region. They are just trying to finish him,” one resident stated.

However, other residents supported the court’s decision, saying it will serve as a deterrent to others who engage in activities that destroy the environment.

They argued that looking at how the issue of illegal mining and destruction of natural resources has affected the region, Chairman Wontumi deserves to serve the full term.

“He has contributed to destroying our forests and water bodies. If he is jailed for 20 years, it will set an example and be a lesson to others. Nobody is above the law,” another resident said.

The sentence has generated mixed reactions across Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region, with debates ongoing on street, political parties and in marketplaces.
